Knitting is no longer an exclusive art of the grandmother: thanks to the creativity and initiative of a group of women, plastic bags of chain stores are now used as feedstock in the production of handbags, purses and hats.
This process took place in Bogotá, Colombia, begins with a massive campaign to collect plastic bags in homes, parishes and universities, is a detailed classification and subsequent preparation of the material treated hygienically. Each bag is cut like thread to finally begin a slow and delicate craftsmanship in the techniques of crochet and 2 needles.
In a bag can be used around 60 to 70 depending on size plastic bags, and a hat are used 40 to 50 bags, resulting in 172,800 recycled plastic packaging in a year or so.
This project hosts a significant social burden: it contributes to socio-economic empowerment of a group called "Women Weavers of Hope" and reducing poverty in the country, thus increasing employment and income of the female population and support the development and empowerment of women heads of households.
The exhibition spaces have been the scenes of display of these items, taken as true jewelry design, quality and price.
This novel approach optimizes the lifetime of non-biodegradable materials, and takes fashion as a means of generating new opportunities.
